about

I wrote this song during Tramlines, July 2014, at which I spent about 2 hours. The rest of the time I hung out in my new loft bedroom, drinking huge iced green tea concoctions, listening to Lou Reed, and reading Robert Greene's 'The 48 Laws of Power', copying my favourite passages onto notecards, as though one day I might be examined on this stuff.

One day I was messing about in open G tuning, trying to play Honky Tonk Women, or some other Stones track, and I starting singing this song about falling in love with a lady of the night, and knowing that, because of the nature of her work, you're probably never going to become some kind of Disney love story, but as the song says, "what's one night between friends?"

This one features Joe and I on T-Rex style handclaps. The bass playing in the verses is very influenced by 'Walk On The Wild Side' by Lou Reed.

I like how you can hear my foot tapping bleeding into the drum microphones during the intro.

lyrics

Lord, you're gonna have to help me
I've gone and fallen in love again
She's a streetwalker
And I don't believe
I've gone and fallen in love again

Just take a break from your busy day
And listen to what I've got to say
I know we don't have much in common
And I know I'm the greatest smooth talker
I know you're never gonna love me long time
What's one night between friends?

Lord, you're gonna have to help me
I've gone and fallen in love again
She's a streetwalker
And I don't believe
I've gone and fallen in love again

I want to do things to your body
That I've only read about in Charles Bukowski
My whole life I've never been nice
But I'll do my best to be sweet
And when you wake up in the morning
I'll bring you something good to eat

Lord, you're gonna have to help me
I've gone and fallen in love again
She's a streetwalker
And I don't believe
I've gone and fallen in love again

about

Oliver Manning Sheffield, UK

Standing on a Sheffield street corner, sporting heavy-rimmed glasses, a bright orange electric guitar, and a Lou Reed wannabe croon, Oliver Manning is Sheffield’s brightest new musical anti-hero. Shamelessly borrowing from the glam tradition but tempering it with the tender and poetic, Manning has struck upon something both fresh and timeless. ... more
